Sweet Smash | Cake Smash Session

Cake smashes are one of my favourites to photograph, more than for the reason that it involves food! This sweet session is super fun. I love seeing a baby have their first taste of cake. Their expressions are priceless.

Miss T. came to visit me again for her 1st birthday. Her ocean blue eyes gives her instant cuteness overload! Mom wanted this lil' party decked out in pink, black and white.

{Consistent communication with my client ensures we are on the same page when decorating and pulling props. In this situation, mom brought her own cake from my recommended local bakery then communicated the decor and colours chosen. I went ahead a pulled backdrop and props accordingly.}

Personalities shine and the expressions are so priceless. I'm bound to get a good laugh every time!

Miss T. sought approval from mom and dad to touch the birthday cake. She was quite cautious and didn't know quite what to make of this round, coloured thing that sat in front of her. Mom gave her some more encouragement and soon this lil' diva was diving into some delicious vanilla cake.

{100% of babies I capture look for parental approval before touching their birthday cake. When the green light is given, the fun part begins! Some babies kind of test the waters, so to speak, and pick and taste. Others dive right in with no holding back. }

She did a great job smashing her birthday cake! Happy Birthday :)




Cake smashes are such a darling keepsake. Turning the Big "1" is a big milestone. Make it a party. Make it a big deal!

Ty is dear to my heart. He is energetic, spontaneous, adventurous and a bit of a drama queen and I take full responsibility for his character. Yup, he is my 8 year-old boy, one of my muses and one of the only who has ever heard my heartbeat from the inside.

Ty came home from school one day excited to tell me all about his history class on pioneers. He was very intrigued by how things "used to get done".  I had a fun idea. We could both get something out of a little plan I devised - visit to a pioneer house in a park with a pioneer museum.

I am lucky Ty makes such a great muse. As a former child commercial model, I just have to tell him where to stand. With his experience, he is used to being able to remain on a spot. The pose and facial expression comes naturally although some extra direction is always necessary.

Imagination is how I get my child clients to interact. I often instruct them to pretend they are a character. I love the imagination kids have. Sometimes, I have to get into character as well to prompt an expression out of them. It's all part of the game.

Below: Ty declares that As the Blacksmith of the village, his trademark is that he make the strongest and sharpest saws.

The sun was at it's brightest and the area was under a heat advisory on this particular day. We were thankful for the cool shade of the trees that canopies this provincial park.

Aside from the heat, it was a great day to photograph here. A fun time to bond with my little guy and get some awesome shots in!
